Tinubu, Ruling APC Making Moves To Lobby, Bribe Christian Association Of Nigeria Leaders Over Muslim-Muslim Ticket—Sources

    [ad_1]

There is fresh information regarding how the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has initiated moves to lobby and bribe some leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to get their support for its Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
Some top APC members of the Christian extraction have kicked against the Muslim-Muslim ticket and expressed their dissatisfaction with the choice of former Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima as Bola Tinubu’s running mate.

Tinubu and Shettima are Muslims – a combination that has triggered varying reactions since the former recently announced the latter as his running mate in Katsina.
Tinubu is from Southern Nigeria while Shettima, a former Borno governor, is from the Muslim-dominated Northern part of the country.
The APC Christian leaders have described the Muslim-Muslim ticket as an insult, particularly as the party’s leadership claimed that competence was the yardstick – implying that no Christian across the north possesses this quality.
CAN and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) have both kicked against the team of Tinubu and Shettima as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the ruling party.
Some respected party members have either quit their membership or stepped aside from the APC’s presidential campaign and are now ready to hit the streets to drive home their grievances.
The APC candidate recently met with the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, following the controversy trailing the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Sources at the weekend told SaharaReporters that Tinubu had set up a team of eminent persons with whom he was scheduled to meet the Christian leaders within the party and faith-based organisations like CAN, PFN and the Catholic, to appeal to them and secure their support.
“The APC, having failed to justify its Muslim-Muslim ticket through other mediums, have reached out to the leadership of the Christian Association in Nigeria to endorse its choice of vice presidential candidate,” a Christian leader and member of CAN told SaharaReporters.
“The APC has concluded plans to secure the endorsement of CAN towards quelling the agitations that have come about due to its choice of Senator Kashim Shettima, a Muslim as the vice-presidential candidate of the party.
“I can tell you authoritatively that APC leadership has sent emissaries to our leadership (CAN) to support or endorse the decision to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket. Talks are ongoing, and the inducement figure is very tempting. I won’t be shocked in the days and weeks ahead; we might see a statement from a faction of CAN endorsing the APC presidential team.
“This is a big challenge for the APC. I think it has realized that the Muslim-Muslim ticket has elicited resentment from most people who view such disposition as an affront to the sensibilities of Christians across the country.”
He continued, “My fear is that some CAN leaders may not resist the offer. It is structured in such a way that it would leave no traces behind. And the amount involved is huge. Talks are ongoing through a senior member of the association with the mandate to get the buy-in of other critical stakeholders in the association.”
The statement was corroborated by a close associate of one of the leaders of CAN. He stated that there had been tremendous pressure to appease the association.
“Before the unveiling of Kashim Shettima, some APC stalwarts reached out to the leadership of CAN, extending an invitation to attend the event. This was rebuffed by CAN, citing no moral justification to attend the event in the face of a clear lack of respect for the sensibilities of Christians in the country,” he said.
“The condition given was the replacement of Kashim Shettima as the vice-presidential candidate of the APC. The decision was hinged on the fact that other political parties respected the ethnic and religious sensitivities in the country, and the APC should not be an exception.”
He added, “I am ashamed of what is going on. I can’t believe that such a topic would be deliberated upon in the first instance. I know the money promised is very tempting, but as servants of the Lord, and at this stage, they ought to have risen above this inducement.
“Why do you think the Christian community can’t speak in one voice? Most of the members of CAN have been grandstanding. They are in the habit of taking care of themselves. If only Nigerians would realize the rot in CAN, they would henceforth take with a pinch of salt whatever statement that emanates from the association.”
An APC chieftain confirmed to SaharaReporters that emissaries had been sent to CAN leadership. He however denied the Christian leaders were being induced with cash.
“We are talking about competence over religious considerations. Talks have reached advanced stages through proxies.“
Calls put across by SaharaReporters to Felix Morka, APC spokesman were not answered or returned.

  • Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Tinubu Only Desperate To Win Election, Doesn’t Care If Decision Was Right Or Wrong – Ruling APC Chieftain

Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Tinubu Only Desperate To Win Election, Doesn’t Care If Decision Was Right Or Wrong – Ruling APC Chieftain

    [ad_1]

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) In Adamawa State, Vrati Nzonzo, has added his voice in rejecting the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
Nzonzo lambasted the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, for undermining the interest of Christians in northern Nigeria.

He said the decision to adopt a fellow Muslim as a running mate by the presidential candidate of the APC, Tinubu may have grave consequences for the party, amongst northern Christians.
In an interview with journalists, Nzonzo, who is also vying for a seat in the National Assembly, vehemently condemned Shettima’s selection as a fellow Muslim, as it amounted to insulting the sensibilities of Christians in Nigeria.
He said, “Let me be as blunt as I can be; I’ll not hesitate to show my displeasure over the decision of my party, the APC, to make our presidential ticket a religious affair.
“Making it a Muslim-Muslim affair has brought to the fore the issue of religion in our politics in Nigeria. Tinubu has through his scheming for the ticket promised to pick a northern Muslim as running mate. He openly said he needs to bring a Muslim VP from the North to win.
“So, ‘ab initio’, he did not paint the picture of competence as he would later want us to believe; he painted the picture of religion. The governor of Kano (Abdullahi Ganduje) was heard saying before it happened that Tinubu has promised to give them a Muslim VP from the North. Several other notable names have been corroborated.”
“Does it mean Tinubu is not Muslim enough; are we having two types of Muslims or what is the issue?” Nzonzo probed.
He maintained that the controversial ticket was capable of truncating the party’s chances in the North.
“Why this issue has caused more damage than good is because for Tinubu is all about winning election, without recourse to whether it is right or not. Now what becomes of people like me who are Christians and candidates on the APC platform? Are we now saying Christian votes don’t matter, if they don’t, are you now not telling them not to vote for me?
“Because I’m in APC and my party has refused to recognise or to be fair to my faith and it’s people in Northern Nigeria. And it’s not only me, a lot of other contesting Christian candidates of the Christian stock will also be victims”, he lamented.
Nzonzo, however, pleaded with the electorates across the country who may have been irked by the choice not to reject other APC candidates, “because it won’t be fair to punish us for Tinubu’s sins,” he said.

Some Nigerians on Twitter have called out a former presidential aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Adamu Garba, for alleged blasphemy.
Garba had while reacting to the news of fake Bishops attending the unveiling of Kashim Shettima as APC candidate’s running mate tweeted an edited photo of him wearing a bishop’s cap.

“Ladies and gentlemen it appears I have a new title,” he said in a now deleted tweet.
The tweet before being deleted was condemned by both Christians and Muslims who accused him of blasphemy.

  • After much ado, Abe finally dumps APC, may join SDP | The Guardian Nigeria News

After much ado, Abe finally dumps APC, may join SDP | The Guardian Nigeria News

    [ad_1]

After going back and forth trying to gain a foothold in the party, Senator Magnus Abe, factional leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has exited the party to seek his long-awaited desire to govern the state via another platform.

The news of Abe pulling out of APC had been in the social media since last week, before a letter of resignation purportedly signed by him (Abe) and addressed to the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, went viral online.

Though Abe on his Facebook’s personal account denied issuing such a letter, a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Parry Benson made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, confirmed that Abe has left APC in search of better fortune in another party.

The statement however did not reveal the next move for the 2023 governorship aspirant, nor the party he was going for. But inside sources within APC told The Guardian, that the former representative of Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly was moving to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Abe had since 2015 made frantic efforts to govern Rivers State but failed due to deep-seated animosity between him and the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi.

On April 18, this year, he again joined the guber race but the intractable splits in APC, which began in 2015 has refused to heal and makes it difficult for Abe to play in the mainstream. He was not part of the Amaechi’s faction of APC, which endorsed Dakuku Peterside as the governorship candidate in 2015.

In 2019, Amaechi again endorsed another party chieftain, Tonye Cole against advice by concerned party members. The move and other irreconcilable issues further widened the division in the party. The court eventually ruled that the APC had no candidate in the elections of that year.

The last straw was the endorsement of Cole, again as the party’s governorship candidate for 2023. The manner that decision was arrived at has caused other aspirants, chieftains of the party and their supporters to take a walk from APC.

Those who left said they no longer see a future in APC, while Tonye Princewill said he left because of the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

Citing his reasons for dumping the party, Abe, while speaking on TVC programme yesterday, maintained that he left to seek greener pastures elsewhere.

He however said he is still part of the family of the APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Senator insisted that although he has left the party, the purported letter of resignation circulating online does not originate from him.

He said: “I have since left the APC in Rivers State but the letter circulating round is not from me. I am still part of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s family and have no issue with him whatsoever.”

“I am a part of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political family and I’m also part of his own family, and that is a very separate thing, from the politics of Rivers state. Yesterday there were some funny letters circulating on the Internet, that I resigned from the APC because Asiwaju refused to intervene in the politics of Rivers State. That is ridiculous, all politics is local, I have no interest whatsoever in the APC in Rivers State.

“I have no stake in the APC in Rivers state, I don’t know anybody that is in the entire executive of the APC in all the 319 wards in the state. I don’t even know who my ward chairman is, I don’t know any ward ex-officio, officer of the party, I don’t have anybody who is running for any office in the APC in Rivers State that I know, except Asiwaju who is running for President.

“I have absolutely no stake in the party in Rivers and all politics at the end of the day is local. And so it will be irresponsible of me to stay in the APC in Rivers state and support a party in which I have no stake in their victory.

“So it is clear to everybody who is watching the politics of this country that my future in the politics of Rivers State is not tied to the All Progressives Congress and so it is clear that I’m no longer a member of the APC in Rivers State as far as that goes; but, the purported letter flying around wasn’t authored by me and I know absolutely nothing about it and it does not reflect my views and my opinions as far as the politics of Rivers State is concerned.

“I have said in the coming days a lot of things will unfold, but the issue of me and the APC in Rivers State I think that was decided a long time ago. I don’t know why people are still speculating and writing letters on an issue that I have made public a long time ago, that I’m not part of the APC as far as Rivers state is concerned.”

  • APC has hidden agenda, says Ex-Minister Dalung

APC has hidden agenda, says Ex-Minister Dalung

    [ad_1]

APC has hidden agenda, says Ex-Minister Dalung

In this interview with JAMES ABRAHAM, the Plateau State Social Democratic Party’s candidate for the House of Representatives, Langtang North/Langtang South Federal Constituency, Solomon Dalung, speaks about the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress and assesses the incumbent governor, Simon Lalong’s administration

How much support are you getting from your new party, the SDP, to represent Langtang North/Lantang South Federal Constituency after resigning your membership from the All Progressives Congress?

So far, so good, we are ready as a party. The SDP is the second oldest party in Nigeria after the Peoples Redemption Party. It’s not a new party to our people except that the two mega parties have dominated the landscape. I have taken the SDP ticket.

In fact, we have just concluded a project on the permanent voter card mobilisation of our people. The SDP is the party to beat for the House of Representatives seat for the Plateau State’s Langtang North/South Federal Constituency and we are ready to emerge victorious come 2023.

Don’t you think the APC will win in the 2023 presidential election?

I don’t think so. It is going to be a serious and herculean task for the party to win because, apart from squandering the goodwill of managing the country in the past seven years, the APC has also introduced a dimension that is going to make it impossible for it to be an option for Nigerians to consider. If it had performed, Nigerians would have overlooked the issue of the same religious ticket it introduced.

What do you make of the controversy over the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket?

It’s the highest manifestation of religious intolerance and insensitivity to the sentiments of Nigerians and an attack on our diversity that has squandered the goodwill of Nigeria.

For me, the worst thing the APC has done is to bring in a joint religious ticket from the same faith. The Muslims in this country have twice elected southern Christians as northern deputies. So, why would Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate and the APC think they would not elect a Southern Muslim and a Northern Christian as his deputy?

The reason why he thought of changing this tradition is that it creates more fear than the ticket itself because it means he has something he is hiding away from Nigerians.

What do you think he is hiding from Nigerians?

What I suspect he may be hiding from Nigerians is that he may be playing the script of an unpatriotic political elite that uses religion to manipulate people and access power.

In reality, they are not religious people because, once they form a government, they use nepotism to appoint family members, in-laws, and other unqualified people to strategic government positions. Their children will be marrying each other and their cronies using the state’s funds.

That does not resemble an agenda for national development; an understanding that there is endemic poverty; hunger; and unemployment ravaging everywhere.

For me, there is a hidden agenda that they are playing the religious card to get power just for the sake of getting power and using it irresponsibly. If they get the power, then they will now manifest their real intentions.

What do you make of the continuous detention of former Governor Joshua Dariye and others despite the state pardon granted to them by the Federal Government?

It is part of the deceit of the Federal Government because the President cannot pronounce an amnesty on citizens and the certificate of release would not be issued until many months after that pronouncement. That tells you how disorganised the APC administration is currently.

It shows the unpreparedness of the APC to govern the country. I think it is a sad thing that the government will make a pronouncement and not implement it at the same time. It has not come out to tell Nigerians why they have continued to hold them in custody.

Now the burden lies with the Attorney-General of the federation to explain why that is the case.

For the purpose of emphasis, let me clarify that the President cannot take back the state pardon granted to those citizens and he cannot withdraw it because there is no provision in the law that gives him the power to withdraw the amnesty that has been given.

The Christian Association of Nigeria and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria had earlier warned parties against a Muslim-Muslim ticket, saying Christians would not vote for such a ticket. Do you think the plan of the APC to retain power will suffer if Christians boycott the APC?

When you introduce religion, you have to also define your friends, opponents, and allies. Assuming the Muslims in Nigeria believe that they are the majority, there are three major religions in Nigeria, which are Christianity, Islam, and the traditional religion. The question that Muslims or those supporting the Muslim-Muslim ticket would have to deal with is, will the traditionalists go with Islam or Christianity? The certain answer will be that the traditionalists will go with the Christians despite their differences.

This is because the Islamic fundamentalist groups that have emerged and been attacking people in Nigeria have painted Islam in a bad light in the eyes of ignorant Nigerians.

Thus, it would be very easy for politicians to manipulate religion and whip up sentiments. I want to assure you that Muslims marry four women. Traditionalists marry more than four, some even 10 or 20. The most populated religion in Nigeria has not spoken, and because of that, we are jostling about claiming superiority in figures because we gather on Friday and Sunday. I know for a fact that there is a man in my local government, a traditionalist, who has 87 eligible voters in his house and you can count them. Once you deploy religion, other religions will look for their allies and align, and either way, whether the Christians lose or win, or the Muslims win or lose, Nigeria is not going to be the same.

So it’s a very dangerous experiment that is facing the current Nigerian situation.

The insecurity in Plateau State seems to have moved to the southern part of the state with the recent killing of over 100 people in Kanam and other communities in Wase. How do you view this development?

It is just a reflection of the security challenges Nigeria is faced with. There was intelligence long ago of arms-carrying men fighting within some forests around Wase and the Southern Zone of the state, but the government did not take any steps up till now when they (the gunmen) started attacking people.

The southern zone is no stranger to this kind of development.

In 2001 and 2005, the southern zone was characterised by this act of banditry, but then, there was national denial, so the appropriate name and nomenclature were not used, but the zone survived it because the communities, when they realised the inability of the security services to defend them, of course, took their destinies into their own hands and mobilised and overran these invading forces.

With a few months remaining to the end of his eight-year tenure, how would you assess Governor Simon Lalong’s administration in Plateau State?

Even he himself is dissatisfied that he has not done well and that his conscience should guide him.

As for me, he disappointed some of us because he failed woefully to fulfill any of the promises he made to the people, just like the APC at the federal level.

For almost eight years he has been in the saddle as a governor. He has nothing to show for it.

Lalong and his supporters have always insisted the APC government has done well, citing what they called legacy projects across the local government areas.

Even the devil has good reasons to defend “himself” and claim that he has been doing well when he has not. You don’t expect him to accept the shameful reality without having to defend himself.

However, any defence he and his cronies may want to put up will collapse. If you take the resources that accrued to his administration in eight years and put them against the so-called legacy projects, you will discover that 10% of the resources didn’t go to those legacy projects that are the sole basis of the analysis of his performance as governor.

We don’t need him to show us projects as legacy projects.

In fact, there is one of the so-called legacy projects, a two-block classroom that I constructed as a minister that he claimed to have done as a legacy project. The legacy projects are still contestable, but I would not expect him to be quiet. He would deny it, but the people know whether his denial is genuine and fair or manipulative.

Which of the classrooms are you referring to?

They are the two blocks of six classrooms in my hometown, my alma mater, the LEA Primary School, Sabon Gida, in the Langtang South Local Government Area. I inaugurated it, and a year later, when I left office as a minister, the governor came and inaugurated it again as part of his legacy project.

How do you view the failure of the Eagles to actually qualify for the World Cup?

Well, I don’t want to talk so much about sports because what is going on in the sports sector is lamentable and I still wonder why the Federal Government or the President has not looked backwards in that direction and done something.

You cannot tell me that in basketball, two national teams both women and men, qualified for the world cup and suddenly, the minister would write a memo to you as the President and advise you that because of a crisis, Nigeria should withdraw from international sports and the career of these young people would be ruined. The players are children of Nigerians who left this country. They were born outside this country and they would have told them that Nigeria is not a country worth dying for.

I Have Left Ruling APC Since, Don’t Know Any Executive Member In Rivers – Magnus Abe

    [ad_1]

A former lawmaker representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe has said he has since left the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, adding that a recent resignation letter circulating online did not come from him.

He, however, said that he was still part of the family of the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Abe, who stated this while speaking on TVC Television Programme on Wednesday morning in Abuja, maintained that he left in order to seek fortune somewhere else.

This position was confirmed by Parry Saroh Benson, the spokesperson for Senator Abe in a statement obtained by SaharaReporters on Wednesday.

Abe said: “I have since left the APC in Rivers State but the letter circulating round is not from me. I am still part of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s family and has no issue with him whatsoever.

“I am a part of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political family and I’m also part of his own family, and that is a very separate thing, from the politics of Rivers State.

“Yesterday, there were some funny letters circulating on the internet, that I have resigned from the APC because Asiwaju refused to intervene in the politics of Rivers State; that is ridiculous, all politics is local, I have no interest whatsoever in the APC in Rivers State.

“When people talk about resignation, how do I resign from the party I don’t even know who the ward chairman is, so I couldn’t have written a letter to people that I don’t know, what I know from the Constitution of the APC, and the constitution of the country is that there are several means by which you leave the party, and one of the means is by way of resignation. So resignation is just one of the ways that are available to members to leave the party.

“You can leave by resignation, you can leave by death, you can withdraw your membership, you can join another political party, the way the APC is sinking in Rivers State, it makes no sense for any politician that has serious political interest in the State to remain in the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State.

“I have no stake in the APC in Rivers State, I don’t know anybody that is in the entire executive of the APC in all the 319 wards in the State. I don’t even know who my ward chairman is neither do I know any ward ex-officio, officer of the party. I don’t have anybody who is running for any office in the APC in Rivers State that I know, except Asiwaju who is running for President.

“I have absolutely no stake in the party in Rivers State and all politics at the end of the day is local. And so it will be irresponsible of me to stay in the APC in Rivers State and support a party in which I have no stake in their victory.

“So it is clear to everybody who is watching the politics of this country that my future in the politics of Rivers State is not tied to the All Progressives Congress and so it is clear that I’m no longer a member of the APC in Rivers State as far as that goes, but the purported letter flying around wasn’t authored by me and I know absolutely nothing about it. And, it does not reflect my views and my opinions as far as the politics of Rivers State is concerned.

“I have said in the coming days a lot of things will unfold but the issue of me and the APC in Rivers State I think that was decided a long time ago.

“I don’t know why people are still speculating and writing letters on an issue that I have made public a long time ago that I’m not part of the APC as far as Rivers State is concerned.”

On Tinubu’s presidential ambition, Abe opined that most Nigerians are looking for assurances as to what the future portends.

“Nigerians are looking for assurances as to what the future portends as it concerns Asiwaju presidency, because whether we like it or not, a lot of families are going through difficult crisis at this time.

“I don’t think the biggest concern in any family now is the church that Shettima attends. I think what people want to hear about everywhere now are issues of what is going to happen to security.

“What is going to happen to the economy, how is this going to affect their life, and the lives of their children, those things are the critical issues.

“I don’t think the issues of the Vice President being a Christian or a Muslim is the most important issue that Nigerians are facing at this time. After all, the current Vice President is a Christian. If that were to be the most important thing for most people then we shouldn’t be complaining right now.

“I understand that there are a lot of people who may be feeling shortchanged or disturbed or even worried by the level of rhetorics that is going on around this issue.

“I think that the responsibility of those who believe in the presidency of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu is to reassure them and explain to them how this presidency will tie into their own goals and aspirations for the future and I think that is what is critical to those who want to support Asiwaju in this country.”

Abe and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi have been at loggerheads in the state, leading to the APC crisis there.

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, Amaechi and Abe’s factions conducted parallel primaries that produced two sets of excos.  Amaechi’s faction produced Tonye Cole as its governorship candidate while Abe emerged as the candidate of his own faction.

The National Secretariat of the party forwarded Cole’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission as its candidate for the state.

However, a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt barred all candidates produced by the primaries of the APC in the state and also restrained INEC from recognising any candidate of the party for the 2019 elections.

In the suit filed by Abe, the court directed INEC to remove all APC candidates from ballot papers and other electoral materials. It also declared the direct and indirect primaries held by the factions as illegal, null and void.

But in February 2019, Amaechi’s faction challenged the decision of the High court at the Court of Appeal and won. It secured a judgment that cleared the way for all APC candidates to contest the election.

On February 8, 2019, the Supreme Court nullified the ruling of the Court of Appeal which allowed APC to field candidates in Rivers State in the general elections.

Troubles as APC legal adviser says 30 cases filed against party in N’west — Politics — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

    [ad_1]

The road to 2023 appears to be rough for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as its legal field operations committee from the Northwest disclosed that no fewer than 30 cases have been instituted against the party at the end of the various primary elections held in the zone.

This was disclosed by the national legal adviser of APC, Ahmed Usman El-Marzuq, while addressing newsmen after a maiden visit to Kaduna. He also assured that the cases will not affect the party in next year’s general elections.

He said the committee will carry out a similar visit to the remaining five political zones across the country to address any legal issues within the party.

“Today the zonal Legal field operations committee met in Kaduna. In attendance were legal advisers from Kano, Kebbi, Kaduna, Sokoto, as well as legal advisers from the National headquarters,” El-Marzuq said.

According to him, the purpose of the meeting was to address legal issues that have emanated from the primary elections during the state Assemblies, Governorship, House of Representatives, Senate and Presidential elections.

“During such exercises, issues of complaints and petitions are usually received. The law has provided remedies for such complaints to be pursued in the various courts in the land.”

El- Marzuq noted that, at this stage, other parties as well as aggrieved party members will employ legal representation, hence, the meeting was intended to strategize ahead of the 2023 elections.

The legal adviser explained that, the maiden meeting availed them the opportunity to know the number of cases filed in the various courts, saying, they have so far recorded 30 cases in the Northwest zone.

Highlighting on the cases, he said some are coming from even the opposition parties, but was quick to add that, the cases will not affect the fortunes of the party in next year’s general elections.

APC picked best victory combination, says National Chairman

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Senator Adamu Abdullahi, in this interview with Arise TV, monitored by our correspondent, SEGUN ADEWOLE, speaks on the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the party and other issues

The All Progressives Congress National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, on Sunday, defended the party’s  Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Adamu, in an interview with Arise TV, said the party picked the best combination of aspirants that would take it to its destination.

The APC Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had two weeks ago, picked a former Governor of Borno State, Senator Kashim Shettima, a fellow Muslim, as his running mate.

Groups including the Christian Association of Nigeria, had faulted the party and its candidate.

Commenting on the issue, Adamu stated, “Ordinarily, I respect the views of people and the politics of people. I cannot for any reason tell you that I don’t care what anybody feels; I do care. But this is Nigeria for you and me. We are inhabited by Christians and Muslims, and we are involved in multi-party politics in Nigeria, and every party in its own value judgment would place on the platform the candidates they feel best can win election. It’s as simple as that. This is politics. Whether you are Muslim or Christian, you know that God Himself does not act in vain. The Bible says it, the Quran says it and our Hadith says so. Our position regarding what you are talking about cannot be any different. We are human beings and we do things to the limit of our understanding and wishes and try to work to get to the desired destination with the combination of the aspirants that we have,” he said.

The APC chairman was then asked if the party’s decision to settle for a Muslim-Muslim ticket was because it found no Christian competent enough to be on its presidential ticket.

He replied, “I respect the views of my Christian brothers and sisters. No doubt about it. I’ll be extremely insensitive not to be accommodating on that. But the fact of the matter is we have a platform called the APC, and when the APC speaks, mine is to lay it along the direction.”

“I will never say that the Christian vote doesn’t matter,” said Adamu when asked if his party’s decision to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket was because Christian votes didn’t matter. “That will be the last thing I will say in my life in politics,” he added.

Asked if non-Muslims will be pleased with the party’s ticket, the Senator said, “The fact of the matter is, in anything you do in this world, somebody wins and somebody loses.”

On if he will step down from his position when the APC wins the 2023 presidential election so as to prevent the party from having a Muslim colouration, Adamu said that will be decided after the election.

“I do not count my chickens before they are hatched. Wait for 2023, wait for the outcome of the election and you will see the fair person in me and our party,” he said.

Addressing the controversy surrounding the APC’s decision to make use of placeholder running mate who was later replaced by the former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, the chairman said the move was within the confines of the electoral laws.

He said, “The laws of his land are absolutely clear, no matter how mischievous any of us wants to be. As far as APC is concerned, I won’t answer for any other party, we had a convention and the convention chose its candidates for the presidential election. Within the legal space available to us and to give us room to go through the candidates that may be desirous of being running mate of our presidential candidate, we had to submit a name that would hold the position before our nomination. The laws of INEC do allow for this. If it didn’t, we would not contemplate doing so. If we did it in the confines of the dictates of the electoral laws of this country, there’s nothing to really lose sleep over. We now have a running mate and we’ve submitted to INEC.” He added, “If the PDP has gone to court, let the court decide. It’s not for me on this programme to decide.”

When made aware of a plan by 192 APC lawmakers to defect from the party as claimed by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, he said, “For what reason?”

He continued, “As the National Chairman of our great party, it is not in my place to lead by speculation. I’m aware Babachir has made known his dislike for the Muslim-Muslim ticket. But I’m not aware that 192 lawmakers are leaving the APC for whichever party.”

On how his party intends to retain power at the centre, he said, “What we have to do is take a look at what Nigerians are saying and what they are going through and see the best way we can to get them out of any situation that is not conducive for life. We’ll continue to do this, we’ll continue processing the act of governance. As for the strategy we’ll adopt to win the election, you don’t expect me to come on this programme and disclose that. No party lays its plans bare. Even in the most civilised and advanced democracy, you don’t see that kind of stuff.”

Asked if he was threatened by the Peoples Democratic Party and the online presence of the Labour Party, Adamu said he had never underestimated his opponents.

“Honestly, I have never underestimated the capacity of my opponents. I will not do so now. This is not my first time as the chairman of a party; I had been secretary and chairman of a party for years, though it was at the state level. I had faced elections, won some and lost some. I have no reason whatsoever to doubt my opponents. The gentleman who is the chairman of the PDP is a good friend of mine, we’ve known each other even before we got to these positions. Peter Obi… I knew him when he was Governor of Anambra State; I visited him when I was governor or minister. These are people that mean well from their outbursts, as far as I’m concerned. They are well-grounded, I don’t have any doubt about that. So, I have no reason whatsoever to underestimate their ability to lead their party to victory. But I’m telling you that we are better organised, we have a higher number of followers, we have a register of members of our party and we can tell you and you can verify it. These other parties don’t quite have. We, as of this moment that I am talking to you, have 22 states and I don’t have a reason to believe we will lose. But I’m not being overconfident. Even if you take away the one you said we lost, your simple arithmetic will tell you what is left for us, and that will take us into the election. I don’t contemplate any situation that will make us lose the election in 2023. But that is not to say we won’t have to work for it. We are working for our victory, and by the grace of God, victory will be ours in 2023.”

On if his party has plans to woo the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, to dump the PDP, Adamu said he couldn’t comment on such despite three governors of his party holding a meeting with the opposition governor.

“In as much as I read the story in the national dailies, the governors you are talking about did not discuss the mission with me nor have they discussed the outcome of the mission with me. I, therefore, cannot comment on it,” he said.
