    I’m More Qualified Than Tinubu — Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi Replies Shettima Over Igboland President Claim

    Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has replied the vice-presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Kashim Shettima for saying that Obi can only be president of Igbo nation.

    SaharaReporters earlier reported that the running mate of Bola Tinubu, the ruling APC presidential candidate, Shettima said the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, can only be President of Igbo land and not Nigeria.

    The former Borno State Governor stated this recently while featuring on a Channel’s TV programme.

     

     

     

     

    He noted that the LP candidate lacked the requisite experience to rule Nigeria and that the country is too big for the former Anambra State governor to handle.

    Obi who replied to him in an interview with Vanguard, said that such a statement from Shettima is a threat to Nigerian unity.

     

     

    He said he satisfied all the requirements to contest for the office of President, adding that he is more qualified than Bola Tinubu who is a principal to Kashim Shetima.

     

    He said, “I’ve heard all sorts of things from people and some are statements that should not be made by people who are in leadership positions. One of the presidential candidates once said a section of the country will not vote for me and now another one. Such statements, for me, debases the polity and questions the unity and the love we should have for each other.

     

     

    “INEC has stated the qualifications for contesting the elections which I’m sure I’ve fulfilled and I do not know the special qualification his principal, the APC candidate, possesses that I do not possess and I think I’m more qualified than his principal for that office. Is it age qualification? Is it education? Is it in terms of being an entrepreneur?

     

     

    “I believe that anybody can be more qualified than me.  But I’m qualified. His principal is a two-term governor, I am a two-term governor too. I’ve managed public resources comfortably and effectively to the best of my knowledge. I’m not saying other people didn’t do well.  I’m not saying others are not qualified. But I’m saying that if we look at what we have been able to do in the past, I’m very very qualified to be the president of the country. 

    “Unless there is another qualification unknown to law and the public. Such statements are statements that have made us bring people who are not competent and people who are not qualified to lead us and that is why we are where we are today.”

     

     

    “I’ve heard people say ‘Obi can make a good vice president to be in charge of the economy.’ But Nigeria’s problem is the economy.  So, a player you know is very good is the one you want to put on the bench, then you are not ready to solve the problem of the country.

     

     

    “If you solve the problem of the economy, insecurity will be reduced in a way. Once the economy is good you can unite the country because once people are productive and are doing well, they will not care about tribalism or religion. And I have said my job is to remove the country from consumption to production,” he added.

    The road to 2023 appears to be rough for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as its legal field operations committee from the Northwest disclosed that no fewer than 30 cases have been instituted against the party at the end of the various primary elections held in the zone.

    This was disclosed by the national legal adviser of APC, Ahmed Usman El-Marzuq, while addressing newsmen after a maiden visit to Kaduna. He also assured that the cases will not affect the party in next year’s general elections.

    He said the committee will carry out a similar visit to the remaining five political zones across the country to address any legal issues within the party.

    “Today the zonal Legal field operations committee met in Kaduna. In attendance were legal advisers from Kano, Kebbi, Kaduna, Sokoto, as well as legal advisers from the National headquarters,” El-Marzuq said.

    According to him, the purpose of the meeting was to address legal issues that have emanated from the primary elections during the state Assemblies, Governorship, House of Representatives, Senate and Presidential elections.

    “During such exercises, issues of complaints and petitions are usually received. The law has provided remedies for such complaints to be pursued in the various courts in the land.”

    El- Marzuq noted that, at this stage, other parties as well as aggrieved party members will employ legal representation, hence, the meeting was intended to strategize ahead of the 2023 elections. 

    The legal adviser explained that, the maiden meeting availed them the opportunity to know the number of cases filed in the various courts, saying, they have so far recorded 30 cases in the Northwest zone. 

    Highlighting on the cases, he said some are coming from even the opposition parties, but was quick to add that, the cases will not affect the fortunes of the party in next year’s general elections.

    In a poll where a section of Conservative Party members voted, Kemi Badenoch, the former UK equalities minister was leading and former chancellor to the exchequer Rishi Sunak was pushed to fourth position.

    The results showed that despite Sunak being popular among Conservative MPs there is some opposition towards Boris Johnson’s former cabinet minister. 31% of the 851 Tory party members who voted in the Conservative Home poll gave Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative MP of Nigerian-origin, an 11-point lead.

    The results were also positive for Truss who won the backing of 20% of those who voted and took the second place beating Penny Mordaunt – who took 18% of those votes – and Rishi Sunak – who stood fourth with 17% of the votes. Tom Tugendhat finished fifth.

    Though Badenoch got a wild card lead, Truss’ rise to second place shows that the party leadership and its MPs could be at loggerheads with grassroots members as there have been calls from many within the party to unite and encircle around a candidate who leans right within the Tories.

    That section of the party have pushed for Badenoch and Truss – both of whom are seen as anti-woke and right-wing, and are perceived as those who would protect the core Conservative party values.

    In the recent parliamentary ballots, Rishi Sunak secured the backing of 101 MPs after securing 88 MPs’ votes in the first ballot. The third ballot will take place on Monday where another candidate will be eliminated.

    The final decision will be taken by Conservative party members once the contenders have been whittled down to the final two.

    Badenoch’s sudden rise will raise questions about Sunak’s ability to see past the finish line. The 41-year-old was born in London and lived in the US and Nigerian city Lagos.

    Sunak and Penny Mordaunt have both earned the ire of the party’s right. While the former has faced questions on the economy, and at times have come up with a good defense of his plans as well as his record, the latter has faced the ire over her views on trans rights. Mordaunt, like Rishi, also stood her ground in the last two TV debates.

    Iain Duncan Smith, one of Liz Truss’ backers, who last week cornered Rishi Sunak with a group of hard-Brexit Tories at a meeting of the Eurosceptic European Research Group (ERG).

    He once again attacked Sunak while speaking to news broadcast agency Sky News accusing him of fuelling inflation. He said when Sunak was serving as the chancellor of the exchequer he along with the Treasury approved Bank Of England to print huge sums of money which fuelled inflation.

    He also criticized the former finance minister’s future plans of getting a grip on inflation and his reluctance to lower taxes to alleviate the UK cost of living crisis.
