I’m More Qualified Than Tinubu — Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi Replies Shettima Over Igboland President Claim

    [ad_1]

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi has replied the vice-presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Kashim Shettima for saying that Obi can only be president of Igbo nation.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the running mate of Bola Tinubu, the ruling APC presidential candidate, Shettima said the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, can only be President of Igbo land and not Nigeria.

The former Borno State Governor stated this recently while featuring on a Channel’s TV programme.

He noted that the LP candidate lacked the requisite experience to rule Nigeria and that the country is too big for the former Anambra State governor to handle.

Obi who replied to him in an interview with Vanguard, said that such a statement from Shettima is a threat to Nigerian unity.

He said he satisfied all the requirements to contest for the office of President, adding that he is more qualified than Bola Tinubu who is a principal to Kashim Shetima.

He said, “I’ve heard all sorts of things from people and some are statements that should not be made by people who are in leadership positions. One of the presidential candidates once said a section of the country will not vote for me and now another one. Such statements, for me, debases the polity and questions the unity and the love we should have for each other.

“INEC has stated the qualifications for contesting the elections which I’m sure I’ve fulfilled and I do not know the special qualification his principal, the APC candidate, possesses that I do not possess and I think I’m more qualified than his principal for that office. Is it age qualification? Is it education? Is it in terms of being an entrepreneur?

“I believe that anybody can be more qualified than me.  But I’m qualified. His principal is a two-term governor, I am a two-term governor too. I’ve managed public resources comfortably and effectively to the best of my knowledge. I’m not saying other people didn’t do well.  I’m not saying others are not qualified. But I’m saying that if we look at what we have been able to do in the past, I’m very very qualified to be the president of the country.

“Unless there is another qualification unknown to law and the public. Such statements are statements that have made us bring people who are not competent and people who are not qualified to lead us and that is why we are where we are today.”

“I’ve heard people say ‘Obi can make a good vice president to be in charge of the economy.’ But Nigeria’s problem is the economy.  So, a player you know is very good is the one you want to put on the bench, then you are not ready to solve the problem of the country.

“If you solve the problem of the economy, insecurity will be reduced in a way. Once the economy is good you can unite the country because once people are productive and are doing well, they will not care about tribalism or religion. And I have said my job is to remove the country from consumption to production,” he added.

  • Tinubu, Ruling APC Making Moves To Lobby, Bribe Christian Association Of Nigeria Leaders Over Muslim-Muslim Ticket—Sources

Tinubu, Ruling APC Making Moves To Lobby, Bribe Christian Association Of Nigeria Leaders Over Muslim-Muslim Ticket—Sources

    [ad_1]

There is fresh information regarding how the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has initiated moves to lobby and bribe some leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to get their support for its Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
Some top APC members of the Christian extraction have kicked against the Muslim-Muslim ticket and expressed their dissatisfaction with the choice of former Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima as Bola Tinubu’s running mate.

Tinubu and Shettima are Muslims – a combination that has triggered varying reactions since the former recently announced the latter as his running mate in Katsina.
Tinubu is from Southern Nigeria while Shettima, a former Borno governor, is from the Muslim-dominated Northern part of the country.
The APC Christian leaders have described the Muslim-Muslim ticket as an insult, particularly as the party’s leadership claimed that competence was the yardstick – implying that no Christian across the north possesses this quality.
CAN and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) have both kicked against the team of Tinubu and Shettima as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the ruling party.
Some respected party members have either quit their membership or stepped aside from the APC’s presidential campaign and are now ready to hit the streets to drive home their grievances.
The APC candidate recently met with the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, following the controversy trailing the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Sources at the weekend told SaharaReporters that Tinubu had set up a team of eminent persons with whom he was scheduled to meet the Christian leaders within the party and faith-based organisations like CAN, PFN and the Catholic, to appeal to them and secure their support.
“The APC, having failed to justify its Muslim-Muslim ticket through other mediums, have reached out to the leadership of the Christian Association in Nigeria to endorse its choice of vice presidential candidate,” a Christian leader and member of CAN told SaharaReporters.
“The APC has concluded plans to secure the endorsement of CAN towards quelling the agitations that have come about due to its choice of Senator Kashim Shettima, a Muslim as the vice-presidential candidate of the party.
“I can tell you authoritatively that APC leadership has sent emissaries to our leadership (CAN) to support or endorse the decision to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket. Talks are ongoing, and the inducement figure is very tempting. I won’t be shocked in the days and weeks ahead; we might see a statement from a faction of CAN endorsing the APC presidential team.
“This is a big challenge for the APC. I think it has realized that the Muslim-Muslim ticket has elicited resentment from most people who view such disposition as an affront to the sensibilities of Christians across the country.”
He continued, “My fear is that some CAN leaders may not resist the offer. It is structured in such a way that it would leave no traces behind. And the amount involved is huge. Talks are ongoing through a senior member of the association with the mandate to get the buy-in of other critical stakeholders in the association.”
The statement was corroborated by a close associate of one of the leaders of CAN. He stated that there had been tremendous pressure to appease the association.
“Before the unveiling of Kashim Shettima, some APC stalwarts reached out to the leadership of CAN, extending an invitation to attend the event. This was rebuffed by CAN, citing no moral justification to attend the event in the face of a clear lack of respect for the sensibilities of Christians in the country,” he said.
“The condition given was the replacement of Kashim Shettima as the vice-presidential candidate of the APC. The decision was hinged on the fact that other political parties respected the ethnic and religious sensitivities in the country, and the APC should not be an exception.”
He added, “I am ashamed of what is going on. I can’t believe that such a topic would be deliberated upon in the first instance. I know the money promised is very tempting, but as servants of the Lord, and at this stage, they ought to have risen above this inducement.
“Why do you think the Christian community can’t speak in one voice? Most of the members of CAN have been grandstanding. They are in the habit of taking care of themselves. If only Nigerians would realize the rot in CAN, they would henceforth take with a pinch of salt whatever statement that emanates from the association.”
An APC chieftain confirmed to SaharaReporters that emissaries had been sent to CAN leadership. He however denied the Christian leaders were being induced with cash.
“We are talking about competence over religious considerations. Talks have reached advanced stages through proxies.“
Calls put across by SaharaReporters to Felix Morka, APC spokesman were not answered or returned.

  • Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Tinubu Only Desperate To Win Election, Doesn’t Care If Decision Was Right Or Wrong – Ruling APC Chieftain

Muslim-Muslim Ticket: Tinubu Only Desperate To Win Election, Doesn’t Care If Decision Was Right Or Wrong – Ruling APC Chieftain

    [ad_1]

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) In Adamawa State, Vrati Nzonzo, has added his voice in rejecting the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.
Nzonzo lambasted the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, for undermining the interest of Christians in northern Nigeria.

He said the decision to adopt a fellow Muslim as a running mate by the presidential candidate of the APC, Tinubu may have grave consequences for the party, amongst northern Christians.
In an interview with journalists, Nzonzo, who is also vying for a seat in the National Assembly, vehemently condemned Shettima’s selection as a fellow Muslim, as it amounted to insulting the sensibilities of Christians in Nigeria.
He said, “Let me be as blunt as I can be; I’ll not hesitate to show my displeasure over the decision of my party, the APC, to make our presidential ticket a religious affair.
“Making it a Muslim-Muslim affair has brought to the fore the issue of religion in our politics in Nigeria. Tinubu has through his scheming for the ticket promised to pick a northern Muslim as running mate. He openly said he needs to bring a Muslim VP from the North to win.
“So, ‘ab initio’, he did not paint the picture of competence as he would later want us to believe; he painted the picture of religion. The governor of Kano (Abdullahi Ganduje) was heard saying before it happened that Tinubu has promised to give them a Muslim VP from the North. Several other notable names have been corroborated.”
“Does it mean Tinubu is not Muslim enough; are we having two types of Muslims or what is the issue?” Nzonzo probed.
He maintained that the controversial ticket was capable of truncating the party’s chances in the North.
“Why this issue has caused more damage than good is because for Tinubu is all about winning election, without recourse to whether it is right or not. Now what becomes of people like me who are Christians and candidates on the APC platform? Are we now saying Christian votes don’t matter, if they don’t, are you now not telling them not to vote for me?
“Because I’m in APC and my party has refused to recognise or to be fair to my faith and it’s people in Northern Nigeria. And it’s not only me, a lot of other contesting Christian candidates of the Christian stock will also be victims”, he lamented.
Nzonzo, however, pleaded with the electorates across the country who may have been irked by the choice not to reject other APC candidates, “because it won’t be fair to punish us for Tinubu’s sins,” he said.

    Tinubu, Obi camps slam Atiku

The Labour Party and the Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation on Friday berated the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, for saying he will win the election next year.

Specifically, the Director-General of Asiwaju Tinubu Presidential Campaign Organisation, Adebayo Shittu, told Saturday PUNCH that the outcome of the 2023 general election would shock Atiku.

He said, “Talk is cheap. Tinubu will be waiting for him. Despite coming from Adamawa, Atiku’s people will prefer to vote for Tinubu.

“When people ask me why I think so, I tell them the evidence is there for all to see. What has Atiku done for his people in Adamawa since he became a politician?

“We in Tinubu’s camp have no fear and we will lose no sleep over the threat of Atiku. Our number one priority in the North-East is to beat him in his constituency in Adamawa. Our victory in 2023 will just be like the MKO Abiola’s election.”

Also, Valentine Obienyem, Peter Obi’s spokesperson, said Obi would win next year’s election.

“Things are not working well in Nigeria today, we have acute hunger in the land. Is it social media generated? We have many things going wrong in Nigeria, not because of social media.

“If it is not because of social media, you cannot say that it’s only those in social media that feel the impact. So, whether you’re in the social media, villages and wherever you are in Nigeria today, we are having the impact of hard times.

“Whether they’re in social media or not does not really affect the vote. I can tell you that 80 per cent of Nigerians believe that it is Peter Obi that will solve all these problems. So, his followership is not social media generated, but a product of the dysfunction that we have in the society today. Followers of Obi go beyond social media,” he added.

Earlier, Atiku had said although he is friends with the All Progressives Congress standard bearer, Bola Tinubu, he is determined to defeat him in next February’s election.

Atiku said these during an interview with Arise Television which aired on Friday.

“Of course, we are still friends but that doesn’t mean we will not have political differences. We have been having political differences since we became friends,” he stated.

When asked if he was determined to defeat Tinubu despite their relationship, the former Vice-President said, “Of course.”

He, however, disagreed with Tinubu for picking a Muslim as his running mate, adding that this would be a threat to Nigeria’s unity.

“I don’t believe in that. I don’t believe it is right for a country like Nigeria that is multi-ethnic, multi-religious and there should be balancing of interest,” Atiku stated.

He recalled that while he was running for President in 2007, Tinubu wanted to be his running mate but he dismissed the idea because they were both Muslims.

The former vice-president claimed that this made Tinubu to abandon him for the candidate of the PDP, Umaru Yar’Adua, who won the election.

“Remember I came out of the PDP on the issue of zoning and together with him we formed ACN and I was given a ticket in Lagos and he insisted on being my running mate and I said no, I am not going to have a Muslim-Muslim ticket. So he switched his support to the late Umaru Yar’adua. That was the departing point,” Atiku stated.

He also dismissed the argument that Tinubu’s choice of Kashim Shettima – who is also from the North-East like Atiku – could give him (Tinubu) an advantage.

Atiku noted that of the six states in the North-East, only Borno and Yobe are dominated by the Kanuri tribe of which Shettima is a part of.

“Certainly my prospects are much higher. If you know the composition of the North-East, you have Borno and Yobe. These are essentially two Kanuri states and then you have the other states which are essentially Hausa/Fulani. So, even if people are going to vote on that basis, I think I have a more favourable position from the North-East,” he stated.

The former vice-president also dismissed the chances of his former running mate, Peter Obi, who is now the candidate of the Labour Party.

Atiku argued that Obi’s popularity was mainly on social media and about 90 per cent of northerners are not on social media. He added that Obi’s candidacy would not split the votes of the PDP because he had no structure or politician to push his candidacy.

“I really don’t expect the Labour Party to take many votes from the PDP as people are speculating. They have no structure at all levels, with no governor, and lawmaker. It will take a miracle for the Labour Party with no structure at the grassroots to win the election.

“They had said through social media they have one million votes in Osun State but how many votes do they have in real life? In the northern part of the country, about 90 per cent of people don’t have access to social media. Most of the electorate are not on social media,” he said.

Atiku added that Obi never informed him of his intention to leave the PDP, adding that he was only informed a few days after.

When contacted for comment, the Director of Media of Tinubu’s Campaign train, Bayo Onanuga, said, “They are friends and Tinubu wants to reply to him (Atiku) personally. We’ll issue a statement tomorrow (Saturday) when Asiwaju replies him personally.”

But the LP said Atiku was restless over Obi’s growing popularity.

It said Atiku’s remark against Obi showed that the ex-Anambra State governor posed a threat to the PDP candidate’s presidential ambition.

The party’s acting National Publicity Secretary, Arabambi Abayomi, said on Friday that the fact that Obi was being constantly attacked showed that he had become a threat to the APC and the PDP.

“All that the presidential candidate of the PDP and its candidate talk about now are Obi and the Labour Party because Nigeria’s structure has changed for the Labour Party.

“I say so because, for the first time in history, we have the NLC and the TUC declaring that workers are members of the Labour Party. Our popularity has sent shivers down their spine; they are not only jittery; they are also confused,” he said.

Meanwhile, Atiku has dismissed claims by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State that the PDP committee set up to select his running mate, picked Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Atiku, who said he was ready to make the recommendations public, said the committee listed three names, including Wike.

He, however, said efforts were on to address disagreements in the party.

On the claim that the PDP had become a northern party since all top leadership positions were being held by northerners, Atiku said the Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, who is from the North-Central, will step aside once the PDP wins the Presidential election.

When asked if his former principal, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, would support him, Atiku said he expected Obasanjo to support him because he was the only one that could carry on his legacy.

He disagreed with the 17 security agencies in the country being headed by people from the same section of the country.

Atiku also said there was an urgent need to remove petrol subsidy. He added that when he and Obasanjo were in government, there was a plan to remove subsidy but this was jettisoned by successive governments.

“It is inevitable (subsidy removal) but has to happen. It has to be accomplished through negotiations with the organised labour and other sectors of the economy. That policy should resume,” he said.

Search interest in Tinubu outstrips Musk on money laundering expose

    [ad_1]

A series of lawsuits filed in 1993 by the United States government against Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on his connection to drug dealers, has received more interest globally than lawsuits against Elon Musk and Tesla.

PlainSite, a non-profit global website dedicated to legal data transparency advocacy, told BusinessDay that it saw a spike of about five times its normal traffic on Saturday, 16 July, due to the Tinubu “story.”

The “story” is in reference to an investigative article written by David Hundeyin, a Nigerian journalist, on the drug past of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress. The story titled ‘Bola Ahmed Tinubu: From drug Lord to presidential Candidate’ traces how the candidate got involved with drug dealers who leveraged his academic background as an accountant to launder their proceeds of crime.

The story, citing court documents, noted that Tinubu was accused of handling and laundering proceeds of heroin trafficking for a Nigerian drug ring in Chicago. The US investigators later obtained a court order to freeze Tinubu’s bank accounts containing the suspected proceeds of heroin trafficking in excess of $1.4 million. On September 15, 1993, Tinubu entered a settlement with the US government agreeing to forfeit $460,000 of the heroin trafficking proceeds to the US government.

Following the release of the story on West Africa Weekly, the internet went agog with many Twitter Spaces dedicated to discussing the story. PlainSite said it witnessed over 22,000 page views, with 17,580 of that traffic coming from searchers in Nigeria in one day alone.

“We saw a spike of about 5X our normal traffic on Saturday, July 16th due to the Tinubu story. In the past, we have published research reports on large U.S. corporations, including Tesla, Inc., so there has been considerable interest in lawsuits regarding Elon Musk and Tesla,” a spokesperson for the non-profit organisation told BusinessDay.

Rushing to Abuja can’t save Oyetola, PDP tells Tinubu

The Peoples Democratic Party has counselled the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, to know that rushing to Abuja in the face of the defeat of his party in the Osun State Governorship election cannot overturn “the will of the people at the poll”.

PDP said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Saturday.

The PUNCH had reported that Tinubu was earlier in Osun State ahead of the poll before leaving for Abuja.

The statement read, “Our Party is already aware that APC leaders are rushing to Abuja in a desperate move to manipulate the process and frustrate the smooth conclusion of the election, having realized that the APC has been rejected by the people.

“Asiwaju Tinubu must know that the people of Osun State have spoken and that his running to Abuja cannot save the deflated Governor Gboyega Oyetola from the reverberating verdict of the ballot box.

“Our Party charges the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC leadership in Abuja to note that the course of the election is already known to all and that the people of Osun State will never accept any outcome to the contrary.

“The PDP charges INEC to resist the manipulations and pressure from the APC by sticking to its assurance to the people that the election will be transparent and conclusive at the first ballot.

“The PDP congratulates the people of Osun State and urges them to remain at alert, protect their votes and ensure that the results declared at the polling centers are not altered but duly reflected at the collation and final declaration.

“We also congratulate all democratic institutions, stakeholders and all patriots who stood by the people to achieve this great shift.”
